Alain Capo-Chichi, an Ivorian entrepreneur, has created the country’s first locally made smartphone. The phone, called “Open G”, is unique in many ways. It can support illiterate users by giving access to voice commands in 16 of the 60 local languages. Languages can be preselected by the Users and use voice commands to initiate basic functions such as text messages or phone calls and more complex actions like mobile transfers.
Capo-Chichi stated that a common challenge in Africa is that many cannot read and write. The phone was created for people with similar challenges as his parents who cannot read and write and have difficulty with their smartphones. His phone makes it easier for such people by giving priority to commands since speech is three times faster than writing. This Smartphone can be used easily by simply speaking to them.
After the launch of the “Open G” several thousand units have been sold. Apart from easing the lives of illiterate and aging users, it can also help persons with disabilities. The Phone’s Voice accessibility settings can help blind, cognitively, and physically disabled people interact more seamlessly with the world around them. Developers reported that the Ivorian smartphone is driven by similar apps such as Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa. Capo-Chichi explained that the user has to speak to send money to someone, and manage economic activity, even without knowing how to read and write.
