Italy Signed Accord with Egypt to End Illegal Mirant Crossings

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni signed an agreement between Europe and Egypt for cooperation and development similar to a deal made by Italy with Tunisia in 2023. Migrant crossing figures as the top agenda of their engagement.

Italy had signed a similar deal with Tunisia in 2023. Meloni and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen made a deal with the country’s President Kais Saied to stop the illegal crossings.  In a Memorandum of Understanding signed on July 16, the EU announced a wide-ranging partnership that included 105 million euros (US$112 million) dedicated to border control.

Significantly, the word immigration is missing from the deal signed between Italy and Egypt. Instead, the semantics used is the fund to be committed to agriculture, training programs, and other related activities. It also lists a series of collaboration agreements in the fields of health, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, and investments.
