Italy and Tunisia have reached and signed an agreement to send back 213 containers of wastes in the first phase, starting on Saturday, February 19, according to the Tunisian Ministry of Environment. Italian waste was supplied illegally to Tunisia for recycling.
The wastes will be re-sent in installments to its place of origin in Italy. In the first phase, the waste will be sent back to the port of Salerno, south of Italy. The scandal of dumping wastes triggered massive resentment in Tunisia, leading to demonstrations demanding the repatriation to Italy.
A Tunisian company brought 280 containers falsely notifying that it was household wastes. However, it was found as plastic waste. A fire broke out in December last year in the warehouse of Tunisian company Soreplast, where the Italian waste in accordance with the customs control was stored. An investigation was initiated to determine the circumstances of the fire, which found that the fire was caused by plastics. According to the terms of the agreement, the first ship is set to carry the waste to Italy shortly.
