Italian prime minister Mario Draghi met with Libyan Interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah in Tripoli on 7th April 2021. Incidentally, that was Italian premier’s first visit abroad since he took over the reins. Many European countries are gravitating towards the North African country, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com yesterday. In recent times, the peace and democratic processes are in full swing in the war torn country. Italy is also trying to cement relations with Libya and influence the precarious political situation. The Greek head of state is slated to visit Tripoli shortly.
One of the key concerns of the European countries is how to stop the illegal migration to their countries using Libya as a hub. France will reopen its embassy in Libya’s capital Tripoli and demanded the immediate withdrawal of foreign fighters present there.
European Council President Charles Michel was in Libya the other day. Though the details of the talk are still not known, it is speculated the visiting EU president seemed to have stressed on the withdrawal of all foreign fighters from Libya and also flagged the migration issue.
