According to Italian official sources, Italian companies will build Libya’s largest highway linking both countries going through Tunisia. Luigi Di Maio, the Italian top diplomat the first phase of the highway to be located in the East of Italy, will soon be unveiled. Italy will also rebuild the Tripoli international airport.
It is also reported that earlier this month, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi discussed the activation of the Italian Treaty of Friendship that includes several projects such as the highway project. The project is an outcome of the 2008 Italy-Libya pact providing for an Italian investment worth €5 billion in Libyan infrastructure as compensation for the colonial period. Italy has established itself as a leading partner of Libya and has extended support to Dbeibah’s Government of National Unity (GNU).
