Israel and Morocco have recently held a bilateral defence meeting wherein the two countries decided to expand their cooperation in intelligence and cyber security. This was revealed by the Moroccan army spokesperson while giving details to the press on the outcome of the meeting.

The two countries agreed to further strengthen cooperation in sharing intelligence, air defence and electronic warfare as part of the military rapprochement between the two countries. The meeting was co-chaired by FAR Inspector General Belkhir El Farouk and Director of the Politico-Military Affairs Office of the Israeli Defence Ministry Dror Shalom.

Various aspects of cooperation including logistics and training as well as the acquisition and modernization of equipment were also examined by both sides. In November 2021, former Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz signed a memorandum of understanding in Rabat, which governs security relations with Morocco. This was followed in July by the visit of former army boss Aviv Kochavi, the first by the Israeli chief of staff to the Cherifian kingdom.

The rapprochement between Morocco and Israel has accelerated since the diplomatic normalization carried out in December 2020. This was within the framework of the Abraham Accords, a process between the Jewish state and several Arab countries, supported by Washington.

This rapprochement is viewed with suspicion by neighbouring Algeria. The North African country is a staunch supporter of the Palestinians.  There are already high tensions between the two countries due to deep disagreements over Western Sahara. Morocco controls 80% of the Western Sahara territory.   The separatists known as the Polisario Front are supported by Algeria.
