US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, has called  for early amicable
solution of dispute between Ethiopia and Egypt in the case of
building of Great Renaissance Dam over River Nile and added that a
great deal of work is still to be accomplished   to iron out the
differences between the two countries.  While pledging his country’s
financial support to strengthen East African allies, he said that the
US would never impose the decision on the parties, which they
themselves should discuss and arrive at a decision.

Ethiopia is Africa’s second most populous nation and a U.S security
ally in the region. The Ethiopian Prime Minister is under mounting
pressure to uphold reforms process and to take them to the logical
end, despite the resistance he is facing from various quarters.
Pompeo met Abiy to discuss mainly the landmark August 29 elections. It
is reported that the pace of reforms also figured in the discussions,
though the two leaders maintained silence over what had transpired.
However, Pompeo said that a free and credible vote will show there is
no false choice between democracy and security.

The US Secretary of State would return to the US after completing the
last leg of his visit to East Africa. It is the first time after so
many months, a high ranking official from the US is visiting Africa.
This is indicative of the renewed importance Washington has assigned
to Africa in its strategic agenda.
