Australia-listed exploration company Invictus Energy is progressing its strategic goals in Zimbabwe’s upstream energy sector by launching the Musuma-1 drilling campaign in the Cabora Bassa Basin. This high-impact initiative builds on earlier gas finds at the Makuyu-2 site, signaling a pivotal move to tap into the region’s largely unexplored petroleum reserves.
Speaking at the recent Africa Energies Summit in London, Managing Director Scott Macmillan highlighted Invictus’s long-term plans for the basin. He noted that the successful Makuyu-2 drilling in 2023 confirmed the presence of gas reservoirs in both the Upper and Lower Angwa formations, validating existing geological models and prompting a more aggressive exploration and development strategy.
The Musuma-1 well, situated on the previously untested eastern edge of the basin, is now at the center of operations. Analysis of seismic data suggests the presence of high-quality reservoir formations and hydrocarbon indicators, raising expectations of identifying a new petroleum play in Zimbabwe. A successful outcome could greatly enhance the country’s gas reserves.
To fully understand the basin’s potential, Invictus is deploying a comprehensive suite of appraisal tools, including 3D seismic surveys, well testing, and additional drilling. These activities aim to determine both technical feasibility and commercial viability as part of a phased development plan.
In the medium term, Invictus plans to execute a pilot gas extraction project at the Makuyu site to demonstrate commercial potential and link with regional energy markets. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to integrate Zimbabwean gas production into Southern Africa’s energy supply chain.
The Cabora Bassa Basin benefits from proximity to key infrastructure such as the Feruka Pipeline and power networks, enhancing the region’s development prospects. Although Zimbabwe has traditionally been absent from global oil and gas exploration, it is now emerging as a frontier market with substantial energy potential.
