The Zambian government, via the Bank of Zambia, has launched a new set of banknotes known as the heritage series to replace the older notes. This series includes high-value denominations of 200 and 500 Zambian kwacha (ZK) for the first time.
The new notes, which began circulating yesterday, will coexist with the old ones for a year. In Zambia, many citizens prefer cash transactions, even for significant purchases like cars and houses, making physical currency essential for daily commerce.

The prevalence of worn-out bills has led the government to introduce more durable banknotes alongside coins. These new notes also address the needs of the visually impaired. The official introduction of the currency was made by Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane and Treasury Secretary Felix Nkulukusa.
