Algeria’s Sonelgaz is advancing its plans to export clean electricity to Europe as part of its strategy to create an electricity link between Algeria and Italy through a submarine cable. To this end, Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Adjal met with Alessandra Basini, President and CEO of the Italian firm Zhero, on February 18, 2025.
Their discussions aimed at expediting the execution of this strategic project by leveraging Zhero’s expertise. The meeting took place at Sonelgaz’s headquarters and included senior executives from the Algerian group and a representative from the Italian Embassy in Algeria. Basini reaffirmed her company’s dedication to the project, emphasizing its significance for Europe and Algeria’s role as a dependable energy supplier.

Adjal highlighted Algeria’s energy goals, which include developing 15,000 MW of renewable energy while maintaining a robust conventional production base. This energy strategy solidifies Algeria’s status as a strategic partner for major companies like Zhero. Zhero is recognized for its innovative energy solutions, focusing on renewable energy development, energy storage, electrical interconnections, and emissions reduction, while also working to optimize production costs and promote advanced technologies.
