India’s Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is currently in South Africa participating in the BRICS conclave in Cape Town and is expected to visit Namibia from 4-6 June. India’s Minister of External Affairs, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is currently in South Africa participating in the BRICS conclave in Cape Town and is expected to visit Namibia from 4-6 June. During his visit, the Minister will meet with the top leadership of the country and other government ministers, stated the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)
The External Affairs Minister’s visit to South Africa and Namibia is expected to further strengthen India’s strong bilateral relations with these two countries. According to the Ministry of International Relations, trade between India and Namibia reached N$4.3 billion (US$252 million) during the 2021-22 period. During the period, India’s exports to Namibia were valued at N$3.5 billion (US$206 million), primarily petroleum products. Namibia, on the other hand, exported goods worth N$786.4 million to India.

BRICS is an acronym for 5 emerging economies of the world viz. – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The term BRIC was coined by Jim O’Neil, the then chairman of Goldman Sachs in 2001. The first BRIC summit took place in the year 2009 in Yekaterinburg (Russia). In 2010, South Africa formally joined the association making it BRICS.
