The governing body of the U.N.’s International Labour Organisation has elected the first director-general from Africa. Togo’s former prime-minister Gilbert Houngbo was elected as the Director-General.
The governing body of the U.N.’s International Labour Organisation has elected the first director-general from Africa. Togo’s former prime-minister Gilbert Houngbo was elected as the Director-General. The election took place on March 25th. Members of the International Labor Organization’s body, representing governments, workers and employers, voted in favour of Gilbert Houngbo as its next chief. He was elected from five candidates including former French labour minister Muriel Pénicaud, who was backed by Paris and the European bloc.
Houngbo succeeds former British trade unionist Guy Rider who held the office for 10 years .He will take charge as the deputy director of ILO from October. Earlier between 2013 and 2017 Houngbo had served in ILO in charge of Field Operations.
