IGAD urges cross border co-operation to tackle food crisis in Horn of Africa

164

Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (Igad) has urged for cross-border co-operation to tackle the food shortage in the Horn of Africa. At its annual disaster Resilience Share Fair meeting in Nairobi last week it, called for the movement of food from the food-abundant regions to scarcity areas. Climate change, conflict and economic instability have left 27 million people facing acute food crisis in the Horn of Africa region. Igad warned that another 20 million faces the risk of falling into this category if humanitarian assistance does not reach them in the next few months. The shortfall of rains, conflict and economic crisis continue to drive food insecurity in the region.  Ethiopia, Sudan and South Sudan are expected to remain among countries facing severe food crisis in the world. The latest projections as of July 2019, project food insecurity levels to be higher in South Sudan and Sudan, stable in Ethiopia and Uganda, and lower in Kenya and Somalia. The German development agency GIZ, has committed $6 million for mitigation of the food crisis.

The goal of the Resilience Share Fair is to disseminate resilience good practices and lessons learned from the Igad region for better preparedness and response to drought and other shocks affecting people in the region.
