Human rights organizations demonstrated in Rome recently asking the Italian government not to roll over an agreement with Libya for preventing migrants and refugees from reaching the European coasts. As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com, a few days ago, human rights activists dubbed the law governing migrants one which lacks empathy, since human rights are blatantly violated in Libya, a reason for the exodus of the migrant population to the  European coast by crossing the Mediterranean Sea.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on development, cooperation, illegal immigration, and human trafficking, was signed in 2017 between the then-Italian Prime Minister Gentiloni and Fayez al-Serraj, Head of the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord in February 2017. The agreement mentions Italy providing the Libyan coast guard with vessels and training to help them to tackle human trafficking and illegal immigration. The MoU also deals with the creation and support of centers in northern African countries, mainly Libya, to host migrants who are caught trying to illegally cross into Europe.

Human rights activists say that these are serious human rights abuses since the detention centers are known for ill-treating migrants caught in the process of crossing over the sea and demand revoking the MOU at the earliest. If not, the agreement will be automatically renewed for three more years.
