The 54-room Hemp Hotel due to be completed in June is built with blocks derived from the cannabis plant. These blocks have been used to fill the building’s walls. Of course, they have been supported by a concrete and cement structure.
Hemp bricks are becoming increasingly popular in the construction world over, particularly in the West. They have attributes like insulating, fire-resistant and climate-friendly properties. The blocks are carbon negative. The hemp blocks suck more planet-warming gases out of the atmosphere than it puts in. The hemp blocks are made of water and lime mixed together to make the blocks.

The industrial hemp used for the Hemp Hotel had to be imported from Britain as South Africa banned local production till last year. Now, the government has started issuing cultivation permits to grow hemp. Now developing the country’s hemp and cannabis sector has become an economic priority. It can create more than 130,000 jobs. Hemp buildings are 20 percent more expensive than buildings made from conventional materials.
