The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has asked for US$30 million to meet impending humanitarian crisis in the Horn of Africa. The region is facing its third drought in a decade, severely impacting Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, among others. Lack of rains coupled with aggravated locust attacks and Covid-19 might lead to a serious threat to food security in the region, according to the FAO sources.

The rapid response and mitigation plan put forward by the UN body will initiate a set of activities that should be prioritized for meeting the crisis, which is building up. FAO Has to fend for an estimated number of 1.5 million people living in rural areas.

East Africa is one of the vulnerable regions, where poverty and destitution are rampant. The region mostly depends on international aid for meeting such exigencies. Being an agrarian region, crop failures normally lead to the need for humanitarian food relief and healthcare works.
