Hong Kong Students Bring Solar Power to 500 Off-Grid Homes in Rwanda’s Gisagara District

(3 Minutes Read)

In Rwanda’s southern Gisagara District, over 100 students and staff from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have installed solar energy systems in more than 500 rural homes, bringing electricity to households that previously had none. This effort is part of PolyU’s service-learning programme, active in Rwanda since 2013, which has electrified over 2,000 homes in off-grid areas.

The solar kits—provided at no cost—include panels, batteries, controllers, and LED lights, enabling lighting and mobile phone charging. Residents previously walked hours to charge phones, highlighting the stark energy access gap.

This initiative aligns with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and NST2 strategies aiming for universal electricity access. Local officials see the project as a model of community-focused, international collaboration. Beneficiaries, like mother-of-four Providence Nikuze, report improved quality of life and better study conditions for children.

The project also fosters cross-cultural exchange and hands-on learning for students, who apply technical and social skills to real-world challenges. PolyU plans to continue and possibly expand the programme, emphasizing sustainable, grassroots development powered by solar energy and education.
