Hichem Mechichi, took over as the new prime minister of Tunisia, putting at rest months’ long political uncertainty. Tunisia’s outgoing Prime Minister, Elyes Fakhfakh was present at the event.

At the handover function, which otherwise used to be a solemn function, outgoing prime minister Fakhfakh was critical of how he was made to vacate the position in a relatively short period in office. He lashed out at the dirty money being used to topple the government by the vested interests and underscored the need for bringing ethics and moral standards in the governance structure to resolve issues like poverty, unemployment, regional imbalances and marginalization.

In attendance at the handover function were the former president of the republic, former heads of government, heads of parties and organizations, the president of parliament, members of the new government, and members of the outgoing government. Incidentally, Hichem Mechichi, is the 9th head of government after the revolution.

Mechichi had received 134 votes in his favour at the confidence vote. He earlier served as the interior minister. Tunisia, despite completing ten years as a democratic country, is still struggling to uphold its democratic values. The pandemic –Covid-19 has abetted the woes of the fragile democracy. The current covid-19 pandemic has not
aided their cause.
