Heavy rains lashed out in Alexandria city, Egypt recently, flooding the city and disrupting public life. Pumping vehicles and workers were deployed to open drains across the city in an attempt to lower the water levels, to ward off the consequences of the perennial rains at this point in time. Though the rains are frequent during the season, people complain that very little action has been taken by the town authorities to face the perennial problems.
More rain is expected in the coming days, and the people complained about the disruption the weather has caused. Schools were schools and offices had only limited attendants. Every year, the port city of Alexandria sinks by three millimeters, a phenomenon scientists take very seriously.

According to the UN Climate panel, the sea will be rising by one meter by 2050, as a worst-case scenario. This will create havoc in many port cities across the world including Alexandria. The water will inundate a third of the fertile land of the Nile Delta.
