Niger is in the grip of a severe heatwave with temperatures zooming to 47 degrees Celsius in recent days unbearable to both humans and livestock. According to the National Meteorological Agency of Niger, the situation may remain like that for some time.

As temperature soars, the elderly and children are particularly susceptible to these severe inclement conditions. The intense heat is causing dehydration and heat stress among animals, leading to a decline in their overall health and productivity.

Livestock mortality rates are increasing due to the harsh conditions. Earth’s average temperature set a new unofficial record high recently, the third such milestone in a week that is already rated as the hottest on record and what one prominent scientist says could be the hottest in 120,000 years. The sudden inclement weather is attributable to climate change.

Niger is known for its extreme heat and aridity. This discourages many travellers. Between March and June, temperatures can rise above 113F (45C). This kind of heat makes desert travel unbearable for much of the year. The average maximum temperatures in Niger range between 87F and 105F (31C and 41C). However, the nights are generally cool or even cold, with temperatures dropping below 68F (20C) in summer and in winter; temperatures can drop below 50F (10C) in central and northeastern parts of the country.
