Guinea will go to polls on March 1st, Sunday for electing a new
President and to approve the new constitution,
The draft constitution will codify gender equality, ban female
circumcision and under-age marriage, among other things. Critics say
the real motive is to extend presidential term limits that will allow
81- year old Conde to run for a third term in office later this year.
His tenure ends in December. Guineans have been protesting since
mid-October. This already had taken a toll of 30 protesters and a
police officer.
The vote to be held concurrently with parliamentary elections, many
apprehend may not be fair. Major political parties have boycotted
the twin polls., They did try to stop it at the first instance from
taking place.
