Political future of Guinea has hit a dead end as the mediation team to
visit the country has postponed the trip in the aftermath of spread of
coronavirus. The mission was to be sent by the Economic Community of
West African States, also known as ECOWAS, a regional political and
economic union of fifteen countries located in West Africa, which has
an estimated population of over 349 million.
ECOWAS mission, among other things, was meant to convince President
Alpha Condé not to run for a possible third term. If such a situation
arises, people fear that it could possibly plunge the nation and
sub-region into violence. The current president had given enough hints
that he would contest the election taking umbrage under the new
referendum, which will elicit the opinion of the voters on extending
the term of office of the president. If the referendum is passed, the
present incumbent technically becomes eligible for re-election.
