Compelled by imminent sanctions, Guinea’s ruling junta has agreed to hand over power to civilians after two years instead of their earlier stand to run the country for four years. This decision to come under the pressure of the international community is contained in a document issued by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

The ECOWAS and Guinea have jointly developed a consolidated chronogram (calendar) of the transition spread over 24 months. However, the document does not specify when this 24-month period begins.

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, the junta head, has pledged to hand over to civilian rule after elections, which will be held in two years’ time. Previously the junta asserted that it would govern for three years and after that, a credible election would be held. should not be delayed beyond three years. On September 22, the leaders of the member states meeting at a summit in New York without the participation of Guinea had given the junta an ultimatum to present a reasonable and acceptable timetable. Upon failing to comply with the deadline, the ECOWAS threatened the country with more severe sanctions.
