Guinean President Alpha Condé in lead in three districts: Opposition disputes the claim

What the opposition parties in Guinea feared might become the outcome of the recent poll , if the preliminary results are any indication. Four of the country’s 38 voting districts results  released by electoral commission chief Kabinet Cisse late Tuesday showed a strong lead for current president Alpha Condé who is seeking a controversial third term. Conde  bagged more than the 50 percent of the vote share needed to avoid a runoff vote.

According to the results released by the Electoral Commission Chief Kabinet Cissé, Professor Alpha Condé, obtained obtained: 104,450, or 49.13% votes, whereas the main opposition leader  Mamadou Cellou Dalein Diallo’s party  UFDG lagged behind with 40,29% in three of the four districts, results  from the rest of the districts are expected
later.

Significantly Cellou Dalein Diallo, who had claimed victory before the counting dismissed the outcome  as manufactured. This had resulted in triggering violence in many parts of the country. Earlier,  Diallo’s supporters were in a celebration mood anticipating a certain victory. It is reported that in the violent clashes with the security forces, several youngsters alleging support to Diallo  were shot dead.

There are also reports that security forces dressed in riot gear surrounded Diallo’s residence in the capital, preventing him to  going out. He claims to have complained about being locked up at home. Fode Oussou Fofana, vice-president of the Diallo’s party – UFDG – said that the current state of counting of more than 80% of the votes clearly indicates that  his  victory in the first round was indisputable.

In the meantime, both AU and ECOWAS said that the election was said to have been transparent, lawful and properly conducted. National resultsare expected later this week.

Preliminary results for four of the country’s 38 voting districts  released by electoral commission chief Kabinet Cisse late Tuesdaymshowed a strong lead for Conde over his main challenger Cellou Dalein Diallo, who had claimed victory Monday.

Many feel that the opposition campaign has been setting the stage for an election dispute, with Fofana accusing the government of “large-scale fraud” in counting ballots from the hotly contested October 18 poll.
