The government of Guinea Bissau has alleged that the campaign against drug trafficking was the cause of the “failed” coup attempt. Immediately after the government forces regained control, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló addressed the nation. He stated that forces opposed to government reshuffles and drug trafficking were behind the coup attempt.
He pointed out that the coup attempt took place a week after a government reshuffle and three days after rumours about the death of the army Chief of Staff Biaguê Na N’Tan who is in Spain for treatment. He stated that apart from the military, individuals under investigation for drug trafficking were involved .He congratulated the defence and security forces for preventing this attack and protecting the democracy.
It may be recalled that the army seized power recently in the three neighbours of Guinea Bissau like Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso citing poor leadership. The alleged link of the attempted coup to drug trafficking sets Guinea-Bissau apart from its neighbours.
