Ugandan farmers are increasingly turning towards organic farming since they find the application of such fertilisers cheap and safe, apart from saving mother earth from pollution created by chemical fertilisers. Farmers keep natural wastes, like mango and jackfruit leftovers in identified places, and in five days they get larvae, which they keep in drums for a week. The larvae are used as natural manure.
They are clean, eco-friendly, and easy to keep. All they need is a warm environment, water, and a place to lay eggs. Once the larvae are five days old, they are sold to farmers who keep them for a fortnight and get fertiliser from the excrement. It helps in two ways. One assisting the farmers to make money by selling larvae and two, applying natural fertilisers which are environmentally friendly.

With fertiliser prices more than doubling in the region in the past year, larvae are a greener and cheaper alternative for local Ugandan farmers to switch over to organic farming. Chemical fertilizers have become costly in the aftermath of the Russia and Ukraine war. There is a place specialized in making larvae in large quantities called the Marula Proteen Hub, which started the program 18 months ago, employing over 100 people and helping more than 1,200 farmers. The project hopes to tackle high unemployment among young Ugandans in the long run.
