Countries in the Great Lakes region of Africa last recently (Friday) adopted a security pact aimed at fostering peace among member states. The accord, reached after considerable consultations over the virtual media, was signed at a meeting chaired by Angolan president João Lourenço. The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) member states includes Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Founded in 2000 when the United Nations Security Council called for an International Conference on peace, security, democracy and development in the Great Lakes region, the body seeks to create a mechanism for avoiding conflicts and to pave the way for lasting peace and harmony. Its secretariat is based in Nairobi, Kenya and is working under the umbrella of the United Nations and the African Union and is focusing on subjects like peace and security, democracy and Good Governance, economic development and regional integration and humanitarian and social issues, gender equality, environment, human rights, HIV/AIDS and human settlements.
