Good to be a part of AfCATA: But protect domestic industry –Tanzanian business lobby

179

Tanzanian industry has welcomed the government’s decision   to be a part of the regional markets under the umbrella of African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCATA), which they feel would improve the business prospects.

The Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI), the apex business organization of the country, while hailing the decision, urged the government to continue focusing on creating an  enabling business environment for domestic   industry to sustain stiff market competition. The apex business association of Tanzania has held recently a symposium in Dar es Salam to discern the nuts and bolts of AfCATA and its impact on the Tanzanian industry.

Chairman of CTI Subash Patel, while addressing the symposium called upon the local people to buy goods manufactured by the domestic companies rather than importing from other countries, since the locally made goods are highly competitive in terms of price and quality. This, he said, would create more employment opportunities in the country and hence more income. One overriding requirement for Tanzanian industry to compete in the emerging free market is the imperativeness for an enabling situation that can empower the local manufacturers to produce goods at competitive cost. This underscores the need for government support and encouragement.
