The Global Competitiveness Report is out with Singapore leading the pack followed by the US. It is important to see how Africa fared in the report. While Mauritius at 52nd in the overall ranking led the group of African countries in the fray, South Africa, despite its current problems, with the overall rank of 60, occupied the second position in the pecking order for the continent. Namibia (94th), Kenya (95th )Rwanda (100th), Uganda (115th), Nigeria (116th ) Guinea (122nd) are the ranked countries.
The Global Index for this year is a mixed bag for Africa. The flip side is 25 of the 34 economies in the region assessed this year, scored below 50, which is considered to be a poor score. On the positive note, Kenya and Nigeria managed to up its score as compared to the previous year, though marginally. Also, of the 25 countries that improved health during the year, 14 are from Sub-Saharan Africa. They could manage that by closing the gap in life expectancy.
