Morocco has announced its vision of a clean energy plan aiming to secure 52% of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030. The north African country has been a major exporter of electricity to Spain since 2018. Both the countries agreed to boost the interconnection with a third link with a technical capacity of 700 MW that is expected to be commissioned before 2026.

Morocco’s electricity exports witnessed a significant surge after the Spanish government adopted an energy transition plan to end electricity generation from coal. As a result, several thermal power plants that produced energy using carbon were closed down.
