Following his victory in the recent elections, Ghana’s President-elect John Mahama has unveiled his vision for improving the lives of Ghanaians. The central focus of his vision includes reviving the economy, tackling unemployment, reforming education, and addressing environmental issues, particularly related to illegal mining.
The core focus of his election campaign was the revival of the Ghanaian economy. The strategy to stabilize the economy includes slashing inflation, strengthening the currency, and cutting the budget deficit. By restoring economic growth, job creation will gradually pick up. He acknowledges the role of the private sector in economic development and has assured to support private sector expansion, particularly through the African Continental Free Trade Area, to foster job opportunities
Mahama acknowledged the burning issue of unemployment and the challenges faced by the youth. He stated that job creation is a long-term process, starting with economic recovery. He was critical about artificial job programs like NABCO, which he said have failed to provide sustainable employment. To create jobs, he proposes to encourage the growth of businesses and invest in infrastructure, particularly in the construction sector.
In the Education sector, he has some clear plans. The Free Senior High School (SHS) program will continue under his administration with improved efficiency. Mahama also announced his plan to hold a national education forum to reform the education system and improve the quality of education, including better facilities and food for students.
Illegal Mining has been a contentious issue for Ghana. Speaking about his approach, Mahama stressed the importance of distinguishing between legal small-scale mining and illegal activities. He cautioned that mining in forest reserves will be banned. The Ghana government proposes to collaborate with environmental agencies to protect water resources and prevent environmental damage. He also plans to introduce environmentally friendly mining technologies and train local miners to adopt safer practices.
