Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo delivered his last State of the Nation Address for his first term  in office.  He was re-elected on December 7 with 51.3% of the votes. However, he has to wait for the decision of the Supreme Court validating his election since the opposition parties have filed a petition alleging irregularities in
the vote.

In Akufo-Addo’s speech, he covered the economic, social, and financial state of the country. In the next parliament, there is  no clear majority for his party, making it difficult for him to implement the reforms. The opposition and the ruling party  share an equal number of members of parliament at 137 each with one independent MP. The role of the independent MP will be crucial for getting major reform programs through.

The Parliament will be inaugurated on January 7, 2021, before which the president would also be sworn-in though his election results are contested. The President also highlighted the type of impasse he may have to face in the next term and called the opposition benches to cooperate on crucial reforms that could  take the country forward, particularly to overcome the impact of pandemic , which had reduced the country’s GDP from 6.5% to 1.9% this year.
