Ghanaians demand resignation of president for failure to address galloping inflation

Hundreds of Ghanaians took to the streets of the capital Accra recently  (5 November)  calling for the resignation of President Nana Akufo-Addo following record inflation. They blamed the government had failure in containing the hyper-inflation 

Hundreds of Ghanaians took to the streets of the capital Accra recently  (5 November)  calling for the resignation of President Nana Akufo-Addo following record inflation. They blamed the government had failure in containing the hyperinflation.

During his re-election, the president embarked on Ghana without aid. But last week President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to support his decision to seek an IMF loan to tide over the economic crisis, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com. The economic crisis is affecting people from all walks of life.

Lead Convener of the Kume Preko Reloaded movement which organised the protest, Martin Luther Kpebu, lamented that for every cedi and dollar that the country borrows, the president’s family benefits through a data bank that advises and helps to sell the government security. Therefore, he urged the president to resign, since has lost the moral power to continue in the position.  So, we are here to tell the president that he should step down. He also blamed what is happening is crony capitalism, where a few people stand to benefit.

Importantly, Ghana is seeking a US$3 billion loan from the IMF to cope with record inflation of 37% and the collapse of its currency, the cedi. In mid-October, shopkeepers in Accra shut down in protest at the soaring cost of living.
