Ghana’s president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his determination to protect the country’s democratic institutions and Rule of Law amidst the challenges faced by the country during Covid-9 pandemic.
In a recent virtual address to the nation on democracy, the president assured the countrymen that Ghana’s tryst with democracy was lasting and strengthening of democratic institutions was a primary objective of his government.
The summit hosted leaders from government, civil society, and the private sector focused on challenges and opportunities facing democracies. He underscored that democracy provided a platform for leaders to make both individual and collective commitments to defend democracy and human rights around the world.
He made a clarion call to the invited heads of state to strengthen their own democracies in three areas – fighting corruption, countering authoritarianism and promoting human rights. Importantly, a second summit is expected in 2022 to take stock of the progress made and forge a common path ahead.
