South African company, Thelo DB Consortium has issued a statement announcing a 25-years Rail Management Agreement with the Ghana government. Under the contract, the consortium (consisting of Thelo DB and Transtech Consult Limited) has agreed to develop and operationalize the 299km Western Railway Line running from the Port of Takoradi to Huni Valley to Obuasi, including the branch line from Dunkwa to Awaso to Nyinahin and to Eduadin. Thelo DB had announced in July that the agreement would be soon signed.

Rail Management Agreement for a $3.2 billion project with the government of Ghana was signed by the Ghana Railway Company Limited. Though Ghana had a railway system even before independence in 1957, it remained a partly functional system. The Project is expected to transform Ghana’s existing rail network into a modern, robust and integrated railway system.

The project comprises of infrastructure, training and Operations and Maintenance Management. The project also covers Planning (all project preparation-related activities, such as feasibility studies, demand analysis, preliminary and detailed design, and procurement consulting); Implementation (systems engineering design, construction supervision, design review, audit systems engineering, testing and commissioning of rolling stock and infrastructure); and Operations and Maintenance Management (early train operator, consulting services in terms of infrastructure operations, rolling stock operations, infrastructure and rolling stock maintenance). The project will also facilitate interoperability of railway systems, modern standardised rolling stock, maintenance facilities, a spare parts regime and operational integration into other transport infrastructure and systems.
