More than eight million unregistered sim cards have been blocked in Ghana by the authorities. The Authorities had given a deadline of November 30th for sim card registration in a bid to ensure digital security.

Ghana’s Ministry of Communication and Digitisation and the National Communications Authority Government made Sim card registration mandatory and issued a directive in October last year to people to get their mobile lines registered. The deadline that was revised several times finally ended on November 30th. With the blocking of the sim cards, their owners will no longer be able to use mobile money services, make calls, or access the internet.

The first stage of the registration procedure involved linking Sim cards with the national identity card details. However, a large portion of Ghana’s population still does not have a national identity card, making it difficult to register their Sim cards. Out of the 32 million population of Ghana, only 20 million mobile lines have been registered.
