The Government of Germany, through the German Federal Foreign Office, has contributed Euro 1.5 million for the years 2021-2023 to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Lesotho. This will support highly vulnerable people struggling to meet their basic food needs amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The aid forms a part of a Euro 18 million contribution by Germany to Southern Africa for 2021-2023.
This contribution will improve access to food and ensure that vulnerable people, including women, have access to an adequate and nutritious diet in times of need. The assistance will be routed through monthly cash transfers via mobile money and commodity voucher assistance.
This funding will contribute to mitigating the suffering of vulnerable people at a time when more of them are in need of humanitarian assistance. According to the 2021 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, about 312,000 people of the total rural population in Lesotho are food insecure. WFP aims to assist 122,000 food insecure people through emergency response assistance until the end of the lean season in March 2022 with monthly cash transfers via mobile money and commodity vouchers. Beneficiaries receive US$ 47 per month to help meet their basic food needs.
