Germany backs inclusion of AU in G20

German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, said he supported the inclusion of the African Union in the G20 group of nations. Speaking on arrival in Ethiopia recently, Scholz reaffirmed the central role played by the African Union in mediating the crisis in Sudan.

The German Chancellor referred to the newly erupted conflict in Sudan and assured support for resolving it with the intervention of the African Union.

American President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, among others, have also advocated for the AU to join the G20. South Africa is currently the only African member of the G20.

After Ethiopia the German chancellor heads to Kenya. In Kenya, Olaf Scholz hopes to establish partnerships in clean energy with a “pioneer” country where 90% of needs are covered by renewables. Kenya, already Germany’s main trading partner in East Africa, plans to cover all of its energy needs with renewables by 2030.
