Problems relating to migration seem to be perennial. The latest controversy is about the allegation of a German charity, which accused the Libyan coast guard of threatening its crew members who were rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. The interference of the coast guards, it is alleged, has led to the drowning of one migrant.
The version of the German charity – SOS Humanity – is that the Libyan Coast Guards used violence and fired live bullets into the water during its life-threatening intervention, which took place recently. The charity operates the rescue ship Humanity 1. According to SOS Humanity sources, the migrants were crossing the Mediterranean Sea in three unseaworthy boats destined for West Europe, when the Libyan Coast Guards intercepted the boat. This led to migrants jumping off the boats to the deep sea.
The timely action of the rescue chip of German charity could save the lives of 77 migrants. But in the process, one migrant died. Also, The Libyan coast guard rescued a few people who were forced to board their ship leading to the separation of family members.
Illegal migration is a live problem between Africa and Western Europe. Every passing year witnessed an increase in the migrant population, seeking better opportunities. Some of the exodus is triggered by political instability in home countries in Africa. Countries in Northern Africa are the haven for migrants to cross the sea because of their geographical proximity to Europe. Of late, Libya seems to be the most preferred hub because of the political uncertainty there. Patrolling by coast guards has been intensified in Northern African countries like Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, and Libya to prevent illegal migration.
European Union, of late, has implemented several innovative schemes in African countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa to prevent illegal migration. Those schemes include capacity building in agriculture, manufacturing, and services sectors to create more employment opportunities in vulnerable countries where the incidence of migration is rampant. But analysts maintain that those measures could not grapple with the situation and illegal migration continues unabated.

Some of the innovative schemes launched by European countries to address migration are mired in controversies and triggered global protests by human rights activists. Courts in Western Europe are also seized up with the matter and have come down heavily on countries that embark on inhuman treatment against migrants. A case in point is the treaty signed between Britain and Rwanda for creating asylum for migrants in a third country. Although the British Parliament finally passed a bill for creating asylum in Rwanda, there are still roadblocks to overcome. The deal signed between Albania and Italy for creating asylum, had invited asylum for illegal migrants. However, there is a fair degree of acceptance of that proposal by the human rights activists there as of now.
