GE Vernova Inc., in collaboration with Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has announced a partnership to design and deliver a state-of-the-art National System Control Centre (NSCC) for the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (KETRACO). The project aims to modernise Kenya’s electricity transmission infrastructure with advanced software and automation technologies, enhancing real-time monitoring, control, and grid management.
The consortium, which secured the project contract in Q1 2025, will build two new facilities: a primary control center in Embakasi and an emergency backup center in Suswa. Both will be equipped with GE Vernova’s cutting-edge grid solutions, including the GridOS platform, Advanced Energy Management Systems (AEMS), Wide Area Management Systems (WAMS), Asset Performance Management tools, and smart substation and communication systems.
Larsen & Toubro will handle the construction and installation of equipment at both greenfield sites, supporting all aspects of configuration, testing, and commissioning. The initiative is expected to be completed within three years.

The development aligns with Kenya’s national energy strategy, which targets universal electricity access by 2030 and a shift to a sustainable, tech-enabled energy ecosystem. Funding for the project is supported by the French Development Agency (AFD), the French Treasury, and the European Union.
GE Vernova will lead the project through its French subsidiary, Grid Solutions SAS, bringing both technological expertise and innovative financing solutions. CEO Philippe Piron emphasised that this project represents a significant leap forward in helping Kenya meet its electrification and decarbonization objectives.
Once operational, the new control system will strengthen the reliability, efficiency, and resilience of Kenya’s power grid while enabling the integration of renewable energy sources.
