Gambian President Ali Bongo may announce his bid for a new term at the celebrations to mark the 55th anniversary of the ruling Gabon Democratic Party in Libreville to be held shortly. Importantly, the 64-year-old president suffered a stroke in 2018, which kept him out of the country for months.

Gambian President Ali Bongo may announce his bid for a new term at the celebrations to mark the 55th anniversary of the ruling Gabon Democratic Party in Libreville to be held shortly. Importantly, the 64-year-old president suffered a stroke in 2018, which kept him out of the country for months.

Bongo seems determined to continue the work, which he started in 2009, despite reports about his indifferent health.

Bongo took over the mantle of presidentship from his father Omar in 2009. The central African country is rich in oil and has huge potential to emerge as an economic hub.  There was a coup in Gambia during his hospitalisation in Morocco, but he survived that with the help of trusted people around him. The coup was orchestrated by junior army officers in January 2019.
