The electoral Commission of Gambia has announced the re-election of Gambian President Adama Barrow. The president won by 53% of the vote, far exceeding his nearest rival Ousainou Darboe, who won about 28%. The opposition has rejected the results alleging irregularities. Darboe and two other candidates, Mama Kandeh and Essa Mbye Faal, stated that the results were unacceptable because of the delay in announcing the results.

On the other hand, the peaceful election was seen by many as a victory for democracy. After 27 years of rule, former President Yahya Jammeh was exiled in 2016.

Addressing the cheering supporters, Barrow promised to use all the resources to make the Gambia a better place for all. Barrow’s first term provided a welcome change for Gambians. However, the coronavirus pandemic damaged the economy that relies heavily on tourism, and exports.
