Gambia: Alpha Sey Champions Organic Farming as Key to Climate Resilience and Rural Empowerment

(3 Minutes Read)

During a full-day engagement with farmers and agricultural stakeholders in The Gambia’s North Bank Region, Alpha Sey, Director of the Njawara Agricultural Training Center, passionately urged a nationwide shift toward organic farming as a practical response to the growing climate crisis. Sey highlighted that the rising demand for chemical-free produce and the potential for higher profits make organic farming not only environmentally responsible but also economically rewarding.

He emphasized the transformative power of sustainable agriculture, detailing initiatives that provide vegetable gardens and organic fertilizer processing facilities, especially for women farmers. These efforts, he explained, help farmers cut costs on pesticides and chemical fertilizers while improving soil fertility and resilience. “We may not stop climate change, but we can build resilience,” Sey noted, stressing the importance of viewing agriculture as a profitable business driven by wise investment and sustainable inputs.

One beneficiary, Matel Bah, testified to the benefits, saying organic farming had cut her expenses in half and produced healthier, longer-lasting crops, increasing both her income and food security.

The regional shift toward organic agriculture is gaining traction, with over 54,000 tons of organic fertilizers distributed in the North and Central River Regions. This initiative forms part of a broader agroecology strategy aimed at enhancing climate change mitigation and building resilient farming communities.

As climate challenges intensify globally—marked by erratic weather and soil degradation—Sey’s advocacy underscores organic farming as a sustainable and empowering solution. By promoting eco-friendly practices and supporting women’s participation, the Njawara Agricultural Training Center aims to make the North Bank Region a model of sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture, paving the way for a greener and more prosperous future.
