The electoral commission of Libya has revealed that Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, son of Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi, has filed as a presidential candidate for the country’s December election. The papers were officially submitted to the High National Electoral Commission office in the [southern] city of Sebha. The other candidates include eastern commander Khalifa Haftar, Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah and parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh.
There is still ambiguity about the rules that govern the eligibility of the candidates who can participate in the elections. The election is viewed as a milestone for the United Nations-backed peace process to end a decade of violent chaos since the overthrow of the then leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.According to reports; rival entities fight over the rules and schedule of the elections threatening the wider peace process.
The presidential ambition of Gaddafi is a very complicated affair. He was hiding for long and was tried in absentia in 2015 by a Tripoli court wherein he appeared via videolink .Though he was sentenced to death for war crimes, he was later pardoned. The International Criminal Court has also accused him of crimes against humanity.
