The transitional Parliament gave a new electoral code the green light in January, enabling members of the military and magistrates to run in elections.

Gabon’s military leader, Brice Oligui Nguema, has announced he would run in April’s presidential elections, after an animated silence for a long time. After President Ali Bongo’s ousting in August 2023, Nguema vowed to give power back to civilians after a transitional period.

The transitional Parliament gave a new electoral code the green light in January, enabling members of the military and magistrates to run in elections.

Nguema announced his candidature at a speech in Gabon’s capital. The 50-year-old former head of the presidential guard said his vision for the nation was a “Gabon rising from the ashes.” Elections in Gabon are due on April 12th.
