Zimbabwe last year imported meat products from South Africa worth over US$1 million. Majority of the imports were poultry products. Zimbabwe is a regular importer of meat from South Africa. But the constant outbreak of cattle disease –foot and mouth disease – affects regular meat trade. In 2018, there was only little beef imports but poultry cuts worth US$ 192,923,80 were imported.
Importantly, South Africa has a substantial market share in other SADC countries’ retail shop investments. In Zimbabwe, South African retail business has made deep imprints. In 2018, South Africa’s exports to Zimbabwe was over US$ I billion, mainly through Beitbridge alone. The products exported through this corridor (Beitbridge) are mainly basic commodities/ groceries and mining consumables. Chrome concentrates, nickel ores petalite , unmanufactured flue cured tobacco and fresh produce are being traded through the border post.  There are also sizeable vehicle exports through the border posts. Some estimates put the vehicle exports from South Africa to Zimbabwe at over 5500 monthly.
