French to help Africa during Covid-19 days

·      The French government has announced a financial package of Euro 1.2 billion to support Africa in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic as the island nation of Seychelles started a 21-day lockdown from midnight of Wednesday.

·      Meanwhile, African leaders are holding virtual meetings to put together a continental response to the pandemic which has seen its statistics – cases, deaths, recoveries – going up in the last fortnight.

The French government has announced a financial package of Euro 1.2 billion to support Africa in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic as the island nation of Seychelles started a 21-day lockdown from midnight of Wednesday.  The country will shut down non-essential services and restrict the movement. Seychelles has 11 confirmed cases of Covid-19.  The airport will remain closed until the end of April while new maritime surveillance will be applied in the island nation

In the meantime, Zimbabwe police had issued a ban on sale of beer under lockdown rules to help contain the coronavirus pandemic. There is another report, which says that police had reversed the earlier statement banning alcohol sales saying supermarkets and registered bottle stores can now continue selling beer on condition it is consumed off the premises. Cameroon which has 203 new cases now and has a total tally of  503.

 

Meanwhile, African leaders are holding virtual meetings to put together a continental response to the pandemic which has seen its statistics – cases, deaths, recoveries – going up in the last fortnight. The conference call was chaired by AU Chair President Cyril Ramaphosa, and the discussions were revolved around  the need to speak with a common voice and seek Africa’s best interest.
