French President Emmanuel Macron has officially announced the end of its decade-long Barkhane anti-jihadist mission in Africa. French forces have been supporting local governments to curb Islamist insurgencies in the Sahel region for a decade. Around 3,000 French soldiers remain in Burkina Faso, Chad and Niger, even now when the announcement has been made.

France also proposes to overhaul its partnerships and operations in Africa, and a new strategy would be soon worked out in consultation with the African partners within the next six months. The French President added that over the next few months, both sides will review and decide on how to profoundly change methods and commitments and adopt a lighter and more integrated deployment with the African partners. He assured that France’s commitment to extend military support for countries in the region will continue but will be guided by new principles.

The complexion of the French military presence in Africa had undergone significant changes over the last few months. Faced with mounting hostility, and anti-colonial response to the presence of the French army, Macron pulled them out of Mali this year.
