France will next week reopen its embassy in the Libyan capital Tripoli. This was revealed by French President Emmanuel Macron. This marks the gradual return of stability to the North African country after years of bloody conflicts that upset the peace and harmony of the oil rich country.

Macron made this announcement when the visiting chairman of Libya’s Presidential Council, Mohammad Menfi and his vice-president Moussa Al-Koni had met him recently in Paris. Macron also said that the French Ambassador to Tripoli would assume office shortly. The French embassy was targeted in April 2013 for a bomb attack.  Since July 2014, the French mission was closed.

The peace process has seemingly returned to the North African country after the takeover of the Interim Government at the instance of the UN, which took the initiative to broker peace between two warring groups. The interim government is mandated to hold the first general election in December this year.  Libya has been torn by civil war when a NATO-backed uprising led to the assassination of the revolutionary leader Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi in 2011. France and Macron have been bitterly critical of Turkey’s military intervention in Libya.
