France Reiterates its Willingness to Support Madagascar in Developmental Front

The President of the Republic of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, met with his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, at the Élysée Palace. This is the fourth meeting between the two leaders since 2019. This illustrates the positive developments and continued strengthening of bilateral relations between Madagascar and France.

During this interaction, Emmanuel Macron warmly congratulated Rajoelina on his recent re-election, while emphasizing France’s willingness to support Madagascar in its development efforts and to address pressing economic challenges. The French President stressed the importance of hydroelectric initiatives, which are crucial to solving the energy deficit that Madagascar has been facing for many years.

The meeting highlights not only the importance of Franco-Malagasy relations but also the collective ambition of the two countries to work together to address the challenges of sustainable development and promote regional stability in the Indian Ocean.

President Rajoelina also took the opportunity to discuss Madagascar’s role as Secretary General of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). He announced the upcoming organization of a summit of IOC Heads of State in Antananarivo and officially invited Emmanuel Macron to participate. The latter enthusiastically accepted, affirming the importance of regional cooperation and friendly ties between their two nations.

The Madagascar President stayed back in Paris to attend the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Malagasy Head of State also plans to continue his state visits to Guinea-Bissau and Angola after his stay in France. This series of international meetings demonstrates Madagascar’s commitment to the world stage and its desire to strengthen its partnerships, both bilaterally and institutionally.
